Ontario Energy Board Partners with IESO to Improve Energy Systems
Ontario has a large population and a growing energy need to match. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) have announced they will team up to help companies and communities test innovative energy technologies.
The IESO Grid Innovation Fund (GIF) and the OEB Innovation Sandbox intend to hold a joint call later this year to officially receive submissions for energy based projects. They want to support research and demonstration projects that could provide value to both consumers and the grid. The submissions of interest would include proposals that test the capabilities of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) at both local and provincial levels.
DERs are resources that produce, store, or manage electricity. They are connected to a grid or located on a customer’s premises. Think along the lines of rooftop solar panels, battery storage units, thermostats and so on.
Ontario is growing in complexity, creating a greater and more diverse energy system. As it grows in complexity, DERs begin to face technical and regulatory barriers and don’t reach their full potential. As such, IESO and OEB are hoping to help fund solutions that remove these limitations and better integrate the market and distribution system. The OEB Innovation Sandbox will offer utilities and other companies carrying out GIF-funded projects assistance on regulatory aspects of their projects where required.
